Super Napier Grass / Pakchong 1 Hybrid Napier Cuttings New!
What it is:
Super Napier is a hybrid of pearl millet and African Napier grass, developed in Thailand at Nakhonratchasima Animal Nutrition Research Center.
- Scientific name: Pennisetum purpureum x Pennisetum americanum
- Sterile, non-GMO, and perennial
Why farmers call it “Super”:
1. High Yield
- 180-200 metric tons of green fodder per acre per year
- Double the yield of traditional Napier grass
- Harvest 7-8 times per year
2. High Nutritional Value
- 14-18% crude protein
- High digestibility and metabolizable energy
- Better milk production, faster animal growth, less need for expensive protein supplements
3. Resilient
- Drought-resistant and tolerates floods and dry spells
- Resistant to pests and diseases
- Grows from sea level to 2500m altitude
- Productive for 7-8 years once planted
4. Farmer-Friendly
- Smooth, hairless leaves - no skin irritation
- Highly palatable for cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits
- Suppresses weeds naturally
- Low input requirements
Best Management for Quality:
Harvest at the 6-leaf stage, cutting 10 cm above ground for best protein 184 g/kg DM and energy 10.4 MJ/kg DM. Avoid waiting too long - protein drops after 14 leaves.
Uses:
- Main feed for dairy and beef cattle, goats, sheep
- Makes up to 80% of cattle diet in tropical areas
- Good for silage to feed year-round
- Sell surplus as fodder for extra income
- Reduces soil erosion and nitrate runoff
Planting Basics:
- Propagation: Stem cuttings, root splits, shoot tips
- Soil: Well-drained loamy soils, but tolerates sandy and clay soils if not waterlogged
- Climate: Warm tropical to subtropical, grows year-round with rain or irrigation
- Land prep: Plow, harrow, add compost or manure
Key Takeaway:
More fodder per acre, better animal nutrition, lower feed costs. Harvest young at 30-45 days for best results. Already used widely in Kenya, Thailand, Philippines, and India.
